// Chapter 02

Create your account & organization

Signing up creates your organization, makes you its owner, and sets up a starter workspace — folders, routing rules, and a plan ready to trial. Here's the whole flow, including the one step people miss.

  1. Fill in the signup form.

Four fields: your full name, your company or organization name, your work email, and a password (at least 8 characters). If you arrived from a pricing page, the plan you picked is already attached — you can change it later.
  2. You land in the app as the owner.

Signup creates your organization and signs you in with a secure session. As the owner you can do everything — including the two things only owners can do: manage billing and request data export/erasure.
  3. Your workspace is pre-built.

SmartDMS provisions default folders and generic filing rules the moment your organization exists, so your first upload has somewhere to go.

Complete checkout to start your trial

This is the step people miss: your trial doesn't start at signup. Until you complete checkout, uploads are disabled and the upload button reads Checkout required.

  1. Open the Billing tab.

A banner guides you there after signup.
  2. Choose your plan and complete Stripe Checkout.

You add a payment method (card or ACH) but are not charged yet — checkout opens your free trial.
  3. Your 7-day trial begins.

The Billing tab shows when the trial started, that your payment method is on file, and the date auto-charge begins.

How the trial works

  • The trial runs 7 days or 250 processed pages, whichever comes first, with full access to your plan's features.
  • You'll get a reminder email before the trial ends with a Manage billing link. Return to the Billing tab to update payment details or cancel before the trial ends.
  • If you hit the 250-page cap early, uploads pause and the Billing tab offers Start paid plan now to keep going immediately.
  • On day 7 your paid plan starts automatically on the payment method you saved — no action needed.
Enterprise plans don't use the self-serve trial — they start with a scoped 30–90-day pilot. See pricing or contact sales.
